Urogynecology
Your Pelvic Health
Over a lifetime, a woman’s body can undergo many changes as a result of childbirth, aging, chronic disease, surgery or repetitive muscular strain. Many women can develop problems with the area known as the pelvic floor: the group of muscles, ligaments, connective tissues and nerves that help support and control the rectum, uterus, vagina and bladder. This condition is called pelvic floor dysfunction.
Uncomfortable, troublesome symptoms of incontinence or prolapse are not conditions that women should simply learn to live with. Effective treatment can repair damaged pelvic floor areas, minimize symptoms and help maintain quality of life.
Solutions for Pelvic Health Issues
The staff specializes in the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders, such as urinary incontinence (leakage) and prolapse (bulging or falling) of the vagina, bladder and/or the uterus.
Treatment options range from non-surgical to surgical intervention, depending on patient preferences, the severity of the condition and the patient’s general health.
Conservative, non-surgical treatments may include medication, pelvic exercise, behavioral and/or dietary modifications, vaginal devices (also called pessaries), biofeedback and electrical stimulation.
Urogynecologic conditions and female pelvic floor dysfunction include:
- Urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine)
- Overactive bladder
- Uterine prolapse, prolapse of the bladder, vagina and/or rectum
- Voiding dysfunction (urinary retention)
- Benign gynecologic surgical problems (e.g., fibroids, pelvic mass)
