Surgical Services
The gynecologic surgeons at Shorepoint Medical Group perform surgical procedures to address a wide range of health issues related to the female reproductive system. Providers aim to help patients improve quality of life and seek better health.
Minimally Invasive and Robotic-Assisted Procedures
When appropriate, the OB/GYN at Shorepoint Medical Group opt to use minimally invasive technology over traditional surgical practices. Patients may heal faster and have less scarring because of smaller incisions. There can also be less risk for complication and infection when procedures are performed this way.

Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is a very common surgical operation during which all or part of the uterus is removed. It is the second most common surgical procedure for women. (Cesarean section is the most common procedure.)
Reasons for Having a Hysterectomy
There are multiple reasons to have a hysterectomy, including:
- Uterine fibroids (the most common reason for a hysterectomy)
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic support problems – such as uterine prolapse
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Gynecologic cancer
Types of Hysterectomy
There are three types of hysterectomy:
- Total hysterectomy – This procedure removes the entire uterus and cervix.
- Supracervical hysterectomy – Removes the upper part of the uterus, but not the cervix. This can be done laparoscopically and is considered to be minimally invasive.
- Radical hysterectomy – This surgical procedure removes the uterus, cervix and structures around the uterus. This is often recommended for women diagnosed with cancer.
Myomectomy
A myomectomy is a surgical procedure in which uterine fibroids are removed. However, unlike hysterectomy, myomectomy leaves the uterus intact and can, in many cases, improve the opportunity for maintaining fertility levels.
Uterine Fibroids
Also called uterine myoma, uterine fibroids are tough noncancerous growths (masses of tissue) that can develop in the uterus during a woman’s childbearing years.
What Happens During a Myomectomy?
Often performed laparoscopically or with robotic assistance, a surgeon removes fibroids through a series of small incisions in the pelvic cavity. The area is filled with air and slightly expanded so that doctors can place a light and a tiny camera into an incision; this allows the physician adequate visualization so he or she can safely remove the uterine fibroids.
Patients are put under anesthesia during the procedure and can often go home that same day if no complications occur.
