Benefits of a Yearly Well-Woman Exam
Did you know that the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends an annual well-woman examination, even for healthy women? During your well-woman visit, you can expect your gynecologist to cover a range of topics, including some of the following:
- Birth control – discuss your options and methods, such as the birth control pill, an intrauterine device (IUD), a patch, condoms or an implant.
- Cancer screenings – most common screenings include breast cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer.
- Vaccinations – if needed, you can receive protection from the flu, HPV and more.
- Health screenings – general screenings related to women’s health like blood pressure, diabetes, bone density for osteoporosis, etc.
- Depression screening – whether mild, moderate or severe, depression is more likely to affect women than men.
- Sexually transmitted infections screening – receive testing for diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and genital herpes if applicable.
- Concerns about sex – discuss common concerns, such as pain or hormone changes, and get all of the questions you may have answered from a doctor specifically for women.
- Weight control – learn your BMI and how your weight impacts your health as a female.
- Issues with your menstrual period – discuss premenstrual syndrome (PMS), heavy bleeding or painful/irregular periods.
- Preconception counseling – if you hope to become pregnant, an OB/GYN at Shorepoint Medical Group will talk to you about increasing your chances (and what to do if you are having difficulty becoming pregnant).
