General Surgery
Appendicitis is a fairly common condition that occurs in approximately one in 15 people in the U.S. over the course of a lifetime. Appendicitis is characterized by inflammation and infection of the appendix, which may be caused by some sort of blockage, trauma, infection in the gastrointestinal tract, or other issue. Most cases of appendicitis require appendectomy (the surgical removal of the appendix) for successful treatment.
What Are The Symptoms of Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is most common in people between the ages of 10 and 30. However, anyone can develop appendicitis. Symptoms of appendicitis in kids and adults may include:
- Severe abdominal pain (especially in the lower right part of the abdomen, where the appendix is located)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Low-grade fever
- Constipation or diarrhea
Abdominal pain may occur before other symptoms, may occur suddenly or could be different from any other abdominal pain experienced.
If you or your child is experiencing abdominal pain or symptoms that could be signs of appendicitis, see an urgent care provider.
Laparoscopic Appendectomy
General surgeons at Shorepoint Medical Group perform laparoscopic appendectomy. This minimally invasive method of removing the appendix involves several small incisions (as opposed to one large incision). Laparoscopic appendectomy has been shown to have fewer complications, lower rate of infection and shorter recovery time when compared to traditional “open” appendectomy.
Appendectomy Recovery
Appendectomy recovery time is typically four to six weeks. After this time period, most people are able to return to their normal exercise routines and lifestyle. Your laparoscopic appendectomy surgeon will provide you with more information prior to discharge.
