What Does an OB Do?
Obstetricians are medical doctors who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth and the female reproductive system. OBs are highly trained and board-certified to provide care for every mother and every type of delivery.
During pregnancy, an OB can:
- Answer any questions you may have about your pregnancy or growing baby
- Monitor your health and the health of your baby with ultrasounds, measurements and other tests
- Screen for conditions that may impact your pregnancy, including high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, infections, and/or genetic disorders
- Advise you about your diet, exercise and medications
- Help manage difficult pregnancy symptoms, such as morning sickness, pain and other complications
- Explain the labor and delivery process
- Work with you to create a birth plan
- Deliver your baby in a healthy, safe way
- Monitor your health as you recuperate from delivery
Additionally, Shorepoint Medical Group’s services include:
- Contraception
- Fetal monitoring
- Infertility counseling
- Preconception counseling
- Sterilization
Could I Be at Risk for a High-Risk Pregnancy?
The only way to determine whether or not you have a high-risk pregnancy is to be seen by an obstetrician. However, the following could be associated with a high-risk pregnancy:
- Health problems such as diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, kidney disease and epilepsy
- Using alcohol or non-prescribed drugs during pregnancy
- Smoking tobacco products during pregnancy
- Being younger than 17 or older than 35
- Multiple pregnancies such as in the case of twins, triplets, etc.
- A history of three or more miscarriages
- A baby with a genetic condition such as Down syndrome, or a heart, lung or kidney problem
- A history of preterm labor, preeclampsia or eclampsia, having a baby with a genetic problem
- Having an infection such as HIV or hepatitis C
